Adding new life to downtown

One of the key components in the revitalization of downtown Winnipeg — the $130-million Centrepoint development on Portage Avenue across from the MTS Centre — has begun breathing new life into the area in a big way. Two of the four major pieces in the nearly one-square-block development — the 160-room Alt Hotel on the Donald Street side and a 400-stall parkade on the Hargrave Street side — began welcoming customers last week.

New downtown hotel has boutique feel

The Alt Hotel will likely be the first in this city that people will say is “cool.” Liane Reeves, the manager of the soon-to-be-open property across Portage Avenue from the MTS Centre, says that is the hotel’s attitude. “We are cool,” she said. “We’re not trying to put on a show. It’s who we are.” At 160 rooms, it is too big to be called a boutique hotel, but it has the feel of one, she said.
